Hako is a Japanese restaurant design concept. The restaurant is a mash up of traditional Japanese bento and ekiben lunch service with the mid-century American automat. Hako means box.
The box used for food service is the focus of the concept. This is an early foam core sketch model.
As a theme, the opening and partitioning of the box need to inform and reflect the larger restaurant interior itself.

Removable chopsticks lock the box using a double dovetail joint.
The curved lines that partition the box influence the partitioning of the restaurant space.

The space is divided into a small take out storefront, a bar, dining area, and sushi bar.
The tower is a wait serving station for standard and made to order boxes.
