The Hunts Point Alliance for Children Karuna Kids storefront is a parent & toddler play space and toy lending library in the Bronx. I was hired by Kevin McElroy Design to provide interior design and contracting services.

A multi-tiered design maximizes high ceilings and opportunities for discovery and adventure.
Various places for play are carefully monitored by an administrative office above deck (upper left).

HPAC had previously used the space for tutoring middle and high school students.
The existing loft structure needed to be changed so adults could comfortably move around above while caring for small children.
The proposed plan
The new structure was designed in section. Adults can always be within two or three steps of child height play areas.
The multi-tiered decking led to the form of a boat. This coincided well with the rich maritime history of Hunts Point.
